How to get the web site you really want!
Getting the web site you really want can be very easy. It involves a little extra preparation by the client before the project starts!
What can you do to help?
Well, you can show us what you want.
To do this, you need to surf the Internet and list some of the sites that you like (and are impressed by), based on the following criteria:
- Sites that appeal to the same target audience.
- Sites whose layout you find stylish and appealing
- Sites whose colour scheme produces a favourable reaction
- Sites whose user interface/navigation system is seamless, and natural to explore
- Sites whose functionality cover many of the aspects you would like to see in your own web site
- Sites where you are impressed by the quality of content
- and, sites where you are knocked out by graphical style
Now list your overall favourite three or four sites (for whatever reasons) and present this list to us, stating the specific elements that you like. We can then look at the web sites, and see how the designers did it. If we reproduce and combine the best elements of this set, we are going to deliver a web site that will undoubtably appeal to you. (There's nothing wrong with borrowing great ideas).
Set the standard.
Produce a list of your competitors' sites. These are the benchmarks we have to better, and hopefully steal all the business from!. Looking at a competitors site can show us where they are failing, and that's an advantage we can use to help your business, in your site design.

What makes the perfect web site? |
Well here's my thoughts.. The perfect web site consists of 'perfect' web pages that are easy to find, easy to navigate between, and provide content that I want to read, in a visually appealing layout. |
What makes the perfect web page then? |
For a search engine it is simple.. text! They can't see pictures and are not interested in your page layout. They simply 'read' text and store it. The important part is the relevance of search queries to the content of the stored text. The more often the query keywords appear in the stored page when compared to the overall amount of page text, the higher up a listing it is pushed (There's much more to it than that, but it's a reasonable generalisation for now). |

Unless the content of the text is utterly fascinating, then humans will be bored with a pure text page straight away. That's because reading from a screen is much more demanding than reading a book. To combat this, we use colour, layout and images to visually enhance the pages and make them more appealing. Unfortunately, the more images and the less text you use, the worse the search result listings will be. That's why sites with introductory 'splash' screens have to to use other methods of promotion. There's only so much you can do behind an image to get a search engines attention. |

The perfect web page fulfills the human visual and information needs AND the search engines text requirements.
